What Can I Give My Dog For Pain? Options & Benefits For Pawrents

Posted by Erica DeLoach on

Pet Health and Pain

Our pets experience many of the same pains we do: arthritis, joint & muscle pain, nausea & gastrointestinal issues, eczema & skin conditions, symptoms from various chronic & acute illnesses, and more. They just can’t communicate it the same way we can.

No one wants to be in pain, let alone see their beloved pet in pain. With all the comfort and love they bring us, we want to do the same for them.

CBD for Pain

It’s no secret CBD for pain is a common choice that grows more popular daily.

CBD and other hemp plant compounds (like CBG & CBN) interact with our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS helps regulate our vital physiological functions and nervous, endocrine, digestive, & immune systems. It heavily impacts sleep, metabolism, inflammation response, pain, overall health, and much more.

All vertebrae mammals have an ECS, so hemp impacts dogs the same way it impacts us.

The ECS is made up of cannabinoid receptors: found throughout the body, bones, bodily systems, and major organs.

Cannabinoids play important roles in appetite, pain management, inflammation, immune function, and more. The body naturally produces endo-cannabinoids, while plants (like hemp) contain phyto-cannabinoids.

Many humans and animals alike struggle to produce their own endo-cannabinoids, choosing to regularly supplement with phyto-cannabinoids like CBD & CBG. Some use it as needed for pain, stress, sleep, and illness.

Consistent use is highly recommended for the most noticeable results. As are high-quality, lab-tested products from trusted companies!

CBD for Dog Pain

A few common reasons people choose to give their dog CBD are:

  • Chronic conditions like arthritis, Crohn's Disease, diabetes, and endocrine disorders
  • Hip dysplasia & pain in specific dog breeds, causing joint wear & tear
  • Anxiety, hyperactivity, and fear of separation, fireworks, or travel
  • Aggression
  • Glaucoma
  • Pain from acute conditions, illnesses, GI issues, or disabilities
  • Seizures
  • Inflammation
  • Skin irritations or minor wounds
  • Immune function & daily health

All of the above (and more) can impact our pup’s pain. Fortunately, CBD and hemp show to be helpful for easing pain & supporting healthy lives in our pups.

CBD Dog Products for Pain

There are countless CBD pet treats, oils, and balms to choose! Some dogs may prefer treats, while others prefer oils. Or both! Take time to find what’s best for YOUR dog, and always consult a licensed veterinarian before trying new herbs or supplements.

Oral

Different oral products include CBD oil, CBD treats, and CBD spray. Often these contain high-CBD, full-spectrum hemp extract or CBD isolate.

Full-spectrum hemp has all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, terpenoids, flavonoids, and other plant compounds. These work together (known as synergy) to enhance and amplify each other’s individual effects (known as the entourage effect).

CBD isolate is the isolated form of the compound CBD extracted from hemp. Those who prefer high doses of pure CBD or are sensitive to other cannabinoids may opt for CBD isolate.

Many prefer full-spectrum options in order to experience the entourage effect. However, some also use full-spectrum hemp & CBD isolate in tandem or separately for different reasons.

CBD Oil for Dogs

CBD oils are sublingual oils with concentrated amounts of CBD. Pet parents can put them directly in their dog’s mouth, on top of treats, mixed in food, or on a paw to be licked.

Full-spectrum hemp oils are a great way for dogs to get high doses of CBD and the full plant benefits.

Non-intoxicating, Bailey’s full-spectrum hemp oil for dogs with naturally-occurring CBD is made with single-sourced hemp extract from a small family farm who hand harvests their hemp.

CBG for Pet Pain

We also have a high-CBG oil for dogs. Known as “the mother of all cannabinoids”, CBG plays a big part in hemp’s benefits.

Still being studied, this cannabinoid is particularly appealing for pets due to being non-psychoactive. Research explores its potential benefits for neurological diseases, skin disorders & infections, chronic pain, bone repair, high blood pressure, inflammation, gastrointestinal issues, glaucoma, seizures, and so much more.

CBG’s possibilities for lasting & long-term pain relief are very exciting!

CBD Treats for Dogs

CBD treats for dogs are another favorite, easy way to share hemp with our best forever friends. For dogs who are sensitive, picky, or prefer a tasty treat, CBD treats are the way to go! Some even put CBD oil on top of CBD treats for an extra-strength boost.

Bailey’s CBD Treats for Dogs

Bailey’s has many delicious, soft chew CBD treats for dogs, all packed with high-quality CBD & ingredients specifically chosen for health, wellness, and pain.

Omega Hemp CBD Soft Chews

Our bacon-flavored omega hemp soft chews won the 2019 California Cannabis Awards CBD Product of the Year award. They contain omega-3-6-9 fatty acids to support your pup’s well-being and happiness. Omega 3s are known for their anti-inflammatory benefits.

With inflammation being a leading cause of many painful diseases, omega fatty acids and CBD work together in synergy to help ease our pet’s pain & prevent it in the future.

Hip & Joint CBD Soft Chews

These chicken-flavored soft chews have naturally-occuring CBD with glucosamine, MSM, & green lipped mussel to help support mobility, arthritic pain, and dogs predisposed to painful hip & joint conditions.

Calming CBD Yummies!

These peanut butter & banana chews focus on calming doggos. With a special blend of tryptophan, valerian root, chamomile, passionflower, & high-CBD hemp extract, these vegan chews are a popular choice for anxious, aggressive, or hyperactive pups.

These ingredients combined with CBD provide ideal calming support - and are studied for their analgesic properties. Stress and anxiety are both symptoms & causes of various painful conditions.

Calming CBD Yummies! are also ideal for dogs who anxiously scratch, lick, or chew their skin. Excessive skin irritation can cause long-term problems, inflammation, and topical pain.

Topical

For dogs struggling with topical inflammation, hot spots, minor wounds, or localized pain, there are CBD balms and salves. Pet parents can put CBD topicals directly on their pet’s body, whether for skin irritations or pain in a certain place. Topicals usually need to be reapplied more often, but many find the relief more immediate & able to target specific areas.

CBD Balm for Dogs

Balms can not only help soothe pain topically and locally, but dogs often still get a little internally due to licking.

Fortunately, Bailey’s Hemp Infused Paw & Nose Balm with Naturally Occuring CBD has 200mg of CBD and safe, plant-based ingredients. These include beeswax, sunflower seed oil, shea butter, aloe leaf juice, and lovingly-sourced hemp extract.

To use, apply balm liberally to any chapped, cracked, or inflamed areas, healing wounds, hot spots, and localized muscle/joint/bone/nerve pain.

CBD Shampoo for Pets

For daily PH balancing, anti-inflammation, flea & tick protection, and anti-itch, CBD Pet Shampoos are another helpful option. Our Bailey’s Pet Shampoo contains 300mg CBD, organic aloe, provitamin B5, avocado oil, and colloidal oatmeal extract for maximum relief & effects.

CBD topicals are used together with internal CBD oils or treats, in order to provide whole-body effects. Make CBD oil & a CBD scrub part of both your routines!

Importance of Consistency for Dog Pain and Chronic Conditions

As with anything, consistency is key when it comes to CBD and hemp. Set a time of day to give your dog hemp and stick to it.

When taken consistently, CBD encourages homeostasis (inner systemic balance) and supports immune function - both which heavily impact pain management. Even if your dog shows no signs of pain, CBD may help prevent it, as well as conditions that cause it. It also may help support a healthy inflammation response.

Start by giving a dose twice daily for two weeks, observe your dog’s behavior, and adjust the dosage accordingly. Veterinarian Dr. Robert Silver suggests a starting dose of 1mg/10lb twice a day.

If not seeing the desired pain relief, increase the dosage after a week. Work with a licensed veterinarian to find your dog’s ideal dosage. It will take time to find what’s best for them!

But time is worth it to help those we love.
